Flavour spotlight: Passionfruit and Lime Kombucha

Passionfruit and lime – it’s a flavour combination that brings up feelings of summer, tropical beaches, warm days, and lingering nights. But it’s not just because passionfruit and lime tastes great that we love using it to flavour our Good Earth Organic Kombucha. They’re both packed with goodness, so in this blog article, let’s take a look at why passionfruit and lime are so awesome.
The power of passionfruit
Passionfruit originated in Brazil and grows well in tropical and subtropical areas. It was introduced to Australia in the 19th century and today, many backyards across Australia feature a passionfruit vine.
There are several varieties of passionfruit available, including the Purple (or common) passionfruit, with the classic dark purple skin and yellow to orange pulp. Other varieties include the larger, red-skinned Panama and the yellow-skinned banana passionfruit, which has more seeds but a less intense flavour.
We love using passionfruit in our Organic Kombucha for its sweet taste of summer. It’s also great in fruit salads and of course, it’s a quintessential topping for everyone’s favourite summer dessert, the pavlova!
But it’s not just its naturally sweet taste that makes passionfruit so popular. Passionfruit is also packed with health benefits, including:
- A rich source of potassium
- High in fibre
- Excellent levels of vitamin C, vitamin A and vitamin K
But on its own, passionfruit can sometimes be a bit too sweet. So that’s why we pair it with the wonderfully acidic lime to create a balanced drink that is sweet but still refreshing.
Lime is a hybrid citrus, which is usually a round fruit of 3-6 centimetre in diameter with several species including the most common Persian lime, Key lime, kaffir lime and desert lime.
As well as providing a great sour counterpoint, limes are also a great source of antioxidants. They are also a good source of:
- Vitamin A, vitamin B, vitamin C and vitamin D
